Drawing children – as they play – can be as rewarding as it is difficult. The difficulty comes with constant movement. The reward is possible however, because often children love to talk. If you manage to draw and be engaged in conversation with your subject at the same time – you can continue referencing the eyes.
As a children’s book illustrator, I have always found that character sketches (and indeed drawings of any face) begin with the eyes. Eyes engage the viewer – an excellent way to meet a book character on the page, especially for the first time.
