Her face is lit with wonder and the aura of light from three flames, three candles.

An illustrative effect achieved by the building up of layers of coloured pencil – the soft application of warm tones for a transparent glow. This is my favourite double page from the first picture book I had the joy of illustrating.

Introducing Queen Becky – ruler of her playkingdom, her imagination and her third birthday.

Kids don’t take long to realise the candles lead to the icing on the cake. You see in the story there’s a new baby in the house, so the icing for Becky is perhaps the attention she receives being birthday Queen for a day.

The photos in this post are of the original illustrations, as published in children’s picture book ‘Queen Becky’, written by Chris Finkelstein – this book may be found in the National Library of Australia’s collection.
