Sketch Book Friday – vignette

It began in a coffee shop with a flat white and a thumbnail sketch in a recycled milk carton notebook. She appeared as a vignette.

You know, the moment Alice fell down the hole and met the White Rabbit – who was late – and why wouldn’t a girl like Alice follow? She had to find out what event Mr Whiskers was going to be late for.

A curious character likes to explore possibilities, and so my visual play with wonderland motifs began.

In twelve months I’ve completed illustrations for a series of 18 or so giclee prints and for 20 different postcards – make that 25, as a festive handful are currently at the printer – yet, I have barely scratched the surface of this tale.

Indeed, Alice and Mr Whiskers will be house guests with my family in 2017 also. Though they may find company waiting to tumble out from between the pages, the other book jackets and dust covers on their shelf.

Illustrating Alice there are as many interpretations as there are illustrators. Try an illustrated Alice  search for related posts.
